J Beverly Hills joined forces with celebrity fashion designer Michael Costello for a night filled with beautiful dresses, stunning hair, and a heartwarming cause. All of the hair styling was done by Lauren Bates exclusively using J Beverly Hills products. We sat down with Lauren and asked her a few questions about the enchanting evening and her take on J Beverly Hills products.
Q: What was your favorite J Beverly Hills product to use when styling this fashion show and why?
A: My favorite product at the show was Perfect Hold. At the fashion shows, I have to be able to rely on a product that delivers longevity. Most models had their hair done three hours prior to walking the runway and the hair needed to make it through quick wardrobe changes. Perfect Hold was reliable and gave me peace of mind backstage!
Q: What did you think of our products?
A: I loved every product that I used! We had 30+ models on this show, all with different texture hair. We were able to customize a product recipe for each models individual needs to achieve the final look flawlessly!
Q: How do our products compare to other styling products you’ve used?
A: I like that J Beverly Hills products are build-able yet easy to break down if a quick change is needed. Anytime I style hair my first step is to create the texture that is needed and I like to be able to build a solid foundation for longevity. I was obsessed with theShine Mist, I don’t think there was a drop left at the end of the night. Most oils/shine products that I work with eventually dissipate into the hair or make the hair too heavy and wet looking. The J Beverly Hills Shine Mist gave even distribution which made the final look extremely sleek and fierce. On the runway it was like glass, I actually got goosebumps when I saw that crazy high shine on every model in the photos!
Q: What was your inspiration for this show?
A: When designing a look for the runway I am always inspired by the wardrobe and try to learn who the designers “girl” is. When I see Michael’s designs I see clean lines, symmetry, a-symmetry with perfect balance and classic/feminine silhouettes. This collection was for a classy, fierce, confident woman with a little edge (in my opinion). Humans, sometimes unknowingly, are instinctively attracted to symmetry. This is why I use a center part a lot for Michael’s shows/shoots, it can be eye catching or appear more striking versus off center which can sometimes translate as messy/distracting.
Q: How did you (and/or Michael) come up with the hairstyle for this show?
A: For this show, Michael was pretty specific with what he wanted. For runway you have to consider timing being a huge factor while also executing a look that reflects the goals of the brand. If I remember correctly, he used words like “extremely clean, sleek, tight” when describing what he envisioned.
Q: How can our readers achieve this look at home? Tips?
A: Build smoothing/anti humatic products into your hair during the blow dry. Find a center part, spray each section with Thermotect and Shine Mistthen flat iron straight. Use a boar bristle brush, gather into a low centered ponytail and secure with an elastic. Spray Perfect Hold to lay down any fly always and blow high heat and low speed aimed in the direction of which you want the hair to lay.
Q: What tips do you have for someone who has naturally curly hair but wants to achieve this desired look?
A: Starting any style by blow drying with the right foundation products will make the final look easier to achieve. I would use Crazy Straight on damp hair before blow drying.
Q: How long did it take to create this look?
A: It should take no longer than 30 minutes to create this look.
Q: What is your all time favorite styling tool?
A: I’m obsessed with blow drying. There is nothing more beautiful than a good quality blow out. It can seem tedious but can make a huge difference in the movement and longevity of the final look.
Q: How did you and Michael start working together?
A: I met Michael at a fashion show in Arizona, he used me for his look book shoot a week later, the rest is history and he has truly become one of my best friends. He is SUCH an inspiring person to work for and I’ve never been on a set or backstage before where I’ve had as much fun as I do with him!
Q: Anything else eventful about the night you want to share with our readers?
A: Well, J Beverly Hills products saved my ass that night! There will ALWAYS be a crazy backstage moment, it never fails. It was pouring rain that night and backstage set up was actually out on the back patio at the studio. They had tarps set up covering us so we didn’t really notice the rain at first. The tarps got completely filled with the rain water and eventually dumped off the edges which was right above the hair team set up. Water dumped on multiple model’s heads and could have made for a major disaster and lots of extra work! I was thanking the J Beverly Hills Gods for the anti-humidity products!!
Michael auctioned one of his dresses and several bow ties along with various other generous donations, all to be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs: The Alliance Family Assist Program. Terrence J and Christina Milian were the celebrity hosts and musical guests included Tyga and Pia Mia.
It was such a privilege for J Beverly Hills to play a small part in this show and we look forward to being involved in many more events such as this!
